What a floating dock costs
| Job | Typical Long Island range | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Floating dock system | $75 – $250 / sq ft | Plus anchoring and accessories. Modular vs timber, size and anchoring method drive the price. |
| Basic personal-watercraft (jet-ski) dock | $8,000 – $15,000 | Drive-on float for one or two PWCs. |
| Full-featured floating system with boat slips | $25,000 – $100,000+ | Multiple floats, gangway, slips and accessories. |
What goes into a floating dock
- The float: modular polyethylene sections, or a timber frame on foam billets.
- Anchoring: pile hoops on driven pilings (most common in canals), or chains and anchors in open water.
- Gangway ramp: long enough that the slope stays walkable at dead low tide.
- Add-ons: drive-on jet-ski or kayak ports, cleats, bumpers, solar lighting.
Tide range changes the design
Sheltered South Shore canals have a smaller tide range than North Shore harbors on Long Island Sound. The bigger the swing, the more a float makes sense, and the longer the ramp has to be to stay at a comfortable angle at low water.
Permits
Floats attached to a dock or the bottom usually need a town permit plus state review. Brookhaven limits residential floats to 8 ft wide by 20 ft long, no more than two per dock, kept at least 6 inches off the bottom at every tide. Southampton requires a separate Trustees permit for floating docks, jet-ski floats, boat lifts and hydro hoists, and seasonal docks must come out by December 1. See the permit guide and your town page.
Town permit rules
Floating Docks help is available on every tidal shoreline in Nassau and Suffolk. After DEC, the local permit comes from your town, city, village or Town Trustees, and the rules differ a lot. Start with yours:
Frequently asked questions
Floating or fixed dock: which is better on Long Island?
Floating docks stay at a constant height above the water, which makes boarding easy where the tide moves a lot. Fixed docks are sturdier in wave-exposed spots and can be cheaper in sheltered canals with small tide swings. Many owners combine a fixed pier with a ramp down to a float.
Do floating docks need a permit?
Usually. In the Town of Southampton, for example, any floating dock, jet-ski float, boat lift or hydro hoist attached to a dock or the bottom needs its own Town Trustees permit, and seasonal docks must come out by December 1. Other towns and DEC have their own requirements.
Do floating docks have to come out for winter?
Many do, because ice and winter storms are hard on floats. Some towns require it for seasonal docks, like Southampton's December 1 rule. Ask whether your system is rated to stay in.
Modular plastic or timber-framed floats?
Modular polyethylene systems are low-maintenance and easy to reconfigure. Timber-framed floats with foam billets are traditional and can be built to custom shapes. Price depends on size, anchoring (pilings vs chains) and the gangway.
