Types of lifts

  • Four-post: the canal standard. Four pilings, one on each corner of the slip.
  • Elevator: mounts on the face of a bulkhead or dock. Good where the slip is narrow.
  • Jet-ski / PWC lifts and floats: smaller, often drive-on floats rather than true lifts.

What drives the price

  • Capacity: sized to the loaded boat. Bigger lifts need bigger motors, beams and pilings.
  • Pilings: new piles driven deep enough for the point loads. Barge access matters.
  • Power: a dedicated electrical circuit at the dock, from a licensed electrician.
  • Permits: town or Trustees plus DEC. Bundling the lift with dock or bulkhead work saves paperwork.

Town permit rules

Boat Lifts help is available on every tidal shoreline in Nassau and Suffolk. After DEC, the local permit comes from your town, city, village or Town Trustees, and the rules differ a lot. Start with yours:

Frequently asked questions

What size boat lift do I need?

Size the lift to your boat's fully loaded weight (hull, engines, fuel, water and gear), not the brochure dry weight. One Long Island contractor recommends capacity at least 25% above loaded weight, for example a 7,000 lb lift for a 22-ft center console of about 5,000 lb.

Do I need a permit for a boat lift on Long Island?

Usually, yes. Lifts sit on pilings in regulated waters. Southampton requires a Town Trustees permit for any boat lift or hydro hoist attached to a dock or the bottom, and DEC filings in Massapequa have bundled a 4-pile boat lift with bulkhead and dock work.

Can a lift go on my existing dock pilings?

Sometimes, but lift pilings carry heavy point loads and usually need to be new, longer and properly embedded. A contractor should check the existing pilings at the waterline before reusing them.

Four-post, elevator or cradle lift?

Four-post lifts are common in canals with room on both sides of the slip. Elevator lifts mount on a bulkhead or dock face where space is tight. Cradle and bunk lifts are what hold the boat, chosen to fit the hull.
